China Trip: Tuesday, 25 July 2006

8:00am
Today's activity was orienteering. The students were placed in teams and were given a map of the area. Actually, we made them draw the map! There were 10 checkpoints, and each checkpoint contained a letter, which put together spelled LEADERSHIP. The topic of the day was love and we held a debate: "Is love a strength or a weakness?" Adam, a TA from last year visited us and together with Felix, judged the debate. Whilst the negative side won (due to better teamwork), all believe that love was a strength. Love, when it was merely superficial or selfish is a weakness, and really isn't love at all. Felix ended by saying, that's what he believes, and that true love was hard to find. I was impressed by how mature these students were. They know the stuff! Good stuff, that is.

2:00pm
We took another 10 girls out today: Cynthia, Rose, Isabella, Sun, Zhi Xin (she's gotta be the quietest in the class – doesn't say a word!), Pan Jing (Belinda), Zeng Li Qin (Shirley), Betty, Wing and Rainy.

We went to a rather pricy place called "Ming Tien Coffee Language". The drinks were around ¥15-25 (~$2.68-4.46). Relatively, it was more expensive than other places, and so these girls haven't been here before. The drinks and ice-cream were good. Jenny noted that the service was pretty much similar to last year – most things were unavailable and the drinks did take quite a while to arrive. When they did arrive, they were sent one-by-one. Apparently they haven't been taught "Maximum Tray Utilisation"! For the 13 of us (including Jenny, Megan and I), it cost ¥260 (~$46.43). Sun did ask if I would come back next year. Same response: I would, if my boss would let me! I was a little worried about young Zhi Xin: she doesn't seem to speak English at all. When we did try to talk to her, she didn't seem to understand and the other girls would have to step in and ask her in Hakka or whatever. Poor thing, I had hoped we could encourage her in some way – and show her a bit of God’s love.

7:00pm
Peter, Ivy and Janet shouted us dinner. We went to a place and had A LOT of food! James and David was taken to this restaurant last year. I ate WAY too much. Peter, at one stage said he was disappointed in me – for apparently not eating enough – that was until I ended my meal by polishing off whatever meat was left on the large pig's elbow!

Food, food and more food!

Down we go!
