China Trip: Wednesday, 19 July 2006

8:00am
Day 3. The topic was “Advertisements”. The activity was to get each student to write up an advertisement on an item we told them to bring from home.

Rose, Rainy, Sun and Albert

Elin, Jim, Fish, Pan Jing (Belinda) and Sophia

James, David, Ling, Linda, Effi and Isabella

Yuki, Jing, Bruce and Jenny (with back to us and hiding some students!)

Tina, Zhi Xin, Nixilly, Sam and Jane

Esther (a TA from another class visiting us), Sophie, Cynthia, Mayket and Torres

One girl, Sophie, sat there for about half and hour with a blank sheet or paper – I helped her draw an advertisement of a bunch of roses. At the end of the class, she spoke the first English sentence I’ve heard from her: “Thankyou for drawing the flowers for me.” It was one of those moments!

4:00pm
I went with Kat, Fong Peng and some of the kids from their Advanced class to the newer part of the city to have some drinks and dessert. Some of the girls made fun of my “chubbiness”.

7:30pm
Together with Jenny and Megan, I went to Culture Square: a park with many basketball courts and table-tennis tables. It was a sight to behold – where would you find such a public place with so many people, having fun for free in Australia?!? We met up with some of our students (mostly guys). One student (David) even brought his family along to see us!
