Murphy's Laws

Most of you have known about "Murphy's Laws". Basically, a Murphy's Law, is a statement of obvious fact. Everyday life one will encounter strange dilemmas or paradoxes. I found an interesting site: Murphy's Laws. I decided to make up a few of my own. When I mean "make up" - it's something i came up with, hopefully without plagiarism. If somebody else came up with them (which I'm currently unaware of), then it's their credit (let me know). Anyway, here there are...

At the shopping mall:
  • The queue you're in is always the slowest, independent of how many people are in front.
  • Corollary: When you're in the express lane, the regular lanes move faster.
  • "8 items or less" is always interpreted as "8 items at least"
  • The most vital ingredient is always out of stock.
  • Corollary: The only one left has already been opened. (or expired, or sampled).
  • It always looks tastier/bigger in the ads (works for any fast food restaurant)

For cars:

  • All complete-care car washes include an invisible target for overhead birds.
  • All complete-care car washes initiate an all out war between Duststorm and Rainman
  • On a long and windy, one-lane road trip, the slow car in front is headed for your destination.
  • In any journey, you're never the idiot.
  • In an accident, when your car is totaled beyond recognition, the other car can still make the showroom.
  • The 100m rule: you always run out of fuel with 100m to go before the next station, or 100m after you passed one.
  • Corollary/add-on: whichever way you have to push your car, it's always uphill.

Wednesday the 2nd...

I haven't been keeping up with posts lately - guess I've been busy. Is this a taste of work-life? I'm on a 3-month work experience as an Undergrad Electrical Engineer - heaps of work to do. I kinda enjoy the work-life, at the same time I also like the uni-life (minus the exams). That's life huh? Anyway, those in Australia would have known there was a huge outburst of rain for over 24 hours in Melbourne. Many areas were flooded. I was bored at work, and I wrote a poem describing it...

It’s Wednesday the 2nd, Feb 2005
Waking up to a new day, as weird as can be
The skies outside seem to tell me it’s night
But that’s just the beginning, just wait and you’ll see

The sun has arisen but dark clouds impede
The rays cannot pass and the sky looms grey
The day has begun with chill winds to freeze
Every bone in your body right through the day

The clouds darken and the rain starts to pour
With no blue sky there’s no sign of ceasing
But we’ve had a hot summer and I believe there are
Farmers out there would find this quite pleasing

Noon time arrives it's almost time for lunch
Still no sign of sun, nor birds, nor blue sky
Rain is still pouring, clouds are still gathering
The heavens won’t stop its relentless cry

Right through the afternoon and well into bedtime
Much time has gone by and not much has changed
I laid my head down and the last thing I heard
Were sounds from outside say the weather still rained

It’s Thursday now, up again at 5
I peer out my window and what do I see?
The rains are still pouring, heavier it seems
It’s still not the end, it’s as bad as can be

The drive to work was a story in itself
10 minutes in and look what I found:
The road has disappeared, the rivers have flooded
I had to drive with care; there’re many deep puddles around

And so I observe that much has happened
In the torrent of storms right through the night
Power has gone out in many a place
Trees have fallen, not an upstanding bin was in sight

I listen to the radio, and much more is happening:
Car accidents, road closures, properties damaged by trees
Trams were stopped: their depots have flooded
Trains were held back: their tracks are now seas

Half-an-hour later a faint glimmer of hope:
I start to see blue in the heavens afar
The rain has slowed down, nay it has stopped!
The sun is appearing, it’s rays are unbarred

More rays I can see, but it seems that though
The dark clouds seem hesitant to let the sun through
But the day is not yet over, and all I can do is pray
For the safety of many out there, people like you
